India held third in the Greco Roman team championship at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship

In a competition that had all the Asian heavyweights, hosts India held on to the third position in the Greco Roman team championship at the Senior Asian Wrestling Championship that came to a close at the Wrestling Stadium of the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium on Sunday. India were level on points with China who got the second position by virtue of their lone gold medal in the 60 kilogram category. Korea topped the team championship in this category with four gold medals.


Three-time Commmonwealth Championship gold medalist Ravinder Singh won bronze medal in the 60 kilogram category on Day 5, the final day of the championship beating Beishalev Azis of Kyrgyzstan 3-1, 0-1, 3-0.

However, Sanjay and Ashok Kumar lost out on a bronze medal in the 74 and 96 kilogram categories respectively. Thirty-year-old Sanjay has been a seven-time National gold medalist and won silver medal at the 2005 and 2008 Commonwealth Championships. Ashok, on the other hand, has silver and gold medals to his name in the 2007 and 2009 Commonwealth Championships respectively and is also the current national champion.

In the overall team championship in Freestyle Wrestling, India stood fifth with Iran topping the table followed by Kazakhstan and Korea.

India were placed fifth in Female Wrestling as well, with China grabbing the top spot and Japan finishing second.

India won medals in the following categories in the five-day Senior Asian Wrestling Championship:


Gold: Narsingh Yadav (74 kg Freestyle)

Gold: Sushil Kumar (66 kg Freestyle)

Silver: Rajender Kumar (55 kg Greco Roman)

Bronze: Sunil Kumar (66 kg Greco Roman)

Bronze: Ravinder Singh (60 kg Greco Roman)

Bronze: Alka Tomar (59 kg Female Wrestling)

Bronze: Suman Kundu (63 kg Female Wrestling)
