FLASH QUOTES @ 4th day

I was playing according to the coach’s strategy. I am very happy with the way my mind played, but the body was tired. The opponent (Young Sik Jung of Korea) never let me run away with the game. He was not able to handle my power. I beat two higher ranked opponents on the same day.

- Sharath Kamal Achanta, India’s top ranked men’s Table Tennis player, after winning his quarter-final match against Young Sik Jung of Korea

While individual players have to think about their own game, we as coaches have to be in the minds of both our players as well as their opponents. You need to be mentally strong to win big points. Every player reacts differently to strategies. But I want every player to give his best, irrespective of the result. We have great support from fans in this tournament, and every tournament is a great opportunity for our players to improve. That we are playing on home soil is a motivation in itself.

- Massimo Costantini, Indian table tennis coach

We are following the plans made by our coaches, head coach Bhawani Mukherjee and Massimo Costantini, and giving our 200 per cent effort. In my case, I have to be focused on my physical fitness. We have improved a lot technically on the table over the years but in the women’s game we are not psychologically there yet. But we can improve a lot. With meditation and positive thinking we will be ready for the Games. We won seven medals in the Commonwealth Championship last time and two in the Melbourne Games. Given the Commonwealth Games is going to be held in India there is a lot of expectation not only from our fans but from ourselves as well. We will do everything to win.

Sharath Kamal Achanta moved into the semi-finals of the ITTF Indian Open Pro Tour

Sharath Kamal Achanta moved into the semi-finals of the ITTF Indian Open Pro Tour with a 8-11, 11-5, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 12-10 victory over Young Sik Jung of Korea on Day 4 at the Yamuna Sports Complex on Saturday. The top ranked Indian player in the circuit will now take on World No. 15 Dimitrij Ovtcharov of Germany in the semi-final at 12.00 pm IST on Sunday.

Sharath Kamal had earlier beaten Patrick Baum of Germany in a close contest (13-11, 11-13, 11-7, 8-11, 8-11, 11-5, 11-9) to advance into the quarter-finals. Ning Gao of Singapore defeated Belgian Jean-Michel Saive to set up the other semi-final clash with Hyun Deok Seo of Korea who beat Sang Su Lee, also of Korea.
Sharath Kamal, however, couldn’t replicate his success in the men’s doubles event as he and Subhajit Saha went down tamely to Sang Su Lee and Hyun Deok Seo of Korea 7-11, 7-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-13, thus ending India’s campaign in all other events. The Indian pair had reached the semis after defeating compatriots Harmeet Desai and Devesh Karia.
The Korean duo will now play Ning Gao and Zi Yang of Singapore, who beat Huang Sheng-Sheng and Wu Chih-Chi of Chinese Taipei in the final of the men’s doubles. In the women’s doubles, I-Ching Cheng and Yi-Hua Huang of Korea will face Li Jiao and Li Jie of the Netherlands in the final on Sunday.
Kenji Matsudaira of Japan defeated Chen Chien An of Taipei to win the U 21 Boys Singles title. The Japanese won 11-4, 14-16, 11-5, 11-6, 11-7. Yu Mengyu of Singapore triumphed by beating Kasumi Ishikawa to lift the U 21 girls’ singles title.

India's participation in CWG/Suresh Kumar Lau

India’s participation in the earlier Games was merely symbolic. India’s true operation in the British Empire and Commonwealth Games began from the Cardiff Games 1958. India appraised its first golden success in the Commonwealth Games through the prodigious feats of that tall, thin sikh from the Indian Army who not only won the gold in the 440 yards run, but also the hearts of those who saw him then. The elegant Milkha Singh’s was a solitary rousing performance for Indian athlete at Commonwealth Games at Cardiff. He ran a superb 440 yards race clocking 46.6 seconds. Wrestler Lila Ram joined Milkha in the gold medal honours. He won the gold in the heavy weight (100 kgs) category. Another wrestler Lakshmikant Pande won a silver in the welterweight (74 kg) category. Since then, the major portion of our success has been in wrestling, weightlifting and shooting. The war with China kept India out at Perth (Australia) in 1962. The host regained the top spot with aggregate of 105 medals (38 gold, 36 silver and 31 bronze). The Australian superiority in pool was complete, with 17 of the 27 titles, including all five relays-four with new world records. India returned strongly to the Kingston (Jamaica). Indian wrestlers have registered themselves into the record books of the Commonwealth Games in a big way. At Kingston in 1966, they won three gold, four silver and three bronze medals. The most of these medals were won by wrestlers who had a rich haul of 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze medals. The gold medal winners were Bishamber Singh (Bantamweight – 57 kg), Mukhtiar Singh (Lightweight – 68 kg) and Bhim Singh (Heavyweight – 100 kg). During the Games, the organizers decided that a title should be changed from the British Empire and Commonwealth Games to the ‘British Commonwealth Games.

Hosts India stumbled in the final against Philippines (12-34) to finish runners-up in the HSBC Five Nations Rugby Tournament (Division II) at the Delhi University grounds here on Saturday.

India, who defeated China 94-0 in their tournament opener, began impressively in the final with Surinder Singh scoring a try in the opening minutes of the match. However, Philippines bounced back with five straight penalties before Matt Saunders helped the visitors finish the first half on a high with a lead of 22-7.

Philippines continued their charge in the second half, adding 12 more points while India could only manage another try through Surinder Singh again.
As a result, Division II winners Philippines will be promoted to Division I while China, who finished fourth in the tournament after losing to Thailand, will be demoted to Division III.
Earlier, Thailand bagged third place in their playoff match against China with a convincing 56-3 victory in the first match of the final day of the tournament.
