Tourist destinations in Delhi/India Gate/Mercy Roy

India Gate
Situated in the heart of New Delhi, originally known as the All India War Memorial, India Gate is one of the largest war memorials in India. The 42 metre tall India Gate was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens. It commemorates the 90,000 soldiers of the erstwhile British Indian Army who lost their lives fighting for the British Indian Empire in World War I and the Afghan wars.

After independence , India Gate became the site of the Indian Army’s Tomb of the Unknown Soldier – The Amar Jawan Jyoti ( immortal soldier ). The shrine is a black marble cenotaph with a rifle placed on its barrel, crested by a soldier’s helmet.

On Republic Day, 26th January, the Prime Minister pays homage to the soldiers along with the Heads of Armed Forces, before joining the annual parade.

Names of Param Veer Chakra Gallantry Award winners are also mentioned on India Gate.
