Top seed Taufik Hidayat lost to unseeded Hsaun Yi Huesh of Chinese Taipei in a major upset of the Badminton Asia Championships. Playing in the knockout round 3 the Indonesian lost in straight sets 22-20, 21-16.

Day 1 of the main draw of the Badminton Asia Championships went on expected lines for India with top seeds Saina Nehwal in women's singles and mixed doubles pair of Jawla Gutta and V Diju crusing to the second stage of the knockout rounds.
